The PT Skate Lounger Chair was designed by Paul Tuttle for Strässle International in the 1960s. The chair features a cantilevered steel frame with wicker seat and backrest and rolling skateboard wheels at the back.
The entire PT Skate series is extremely rare – only two other pieces from the set are available online, this being the only lounge chair. Very little information is available aside from this catalogue image from the Paul Tuttle Museum in Santa Barbara, which shows the full collection.
Tuttle was known for sleek, elegant, and refined modern furniture, as well as combining materials like metal, leather, and glass. Tuttle began designing furniture in the 1950s, and his style was heavily influenced by the modernist style of mentor Alvin Lustig. Tuttle followed the modernist ideal of minimalism, eschewing decorative ornamentation on his furniture. His work emphasized the materials he used and he sought to reflect the essence of function in his pieces.
